DeviantTracker Samples
- There are two sets of DNA found on the bloody gauze.
- Compare the unknown DNA sample with the gallery of animal DNA samples below it.
Luggage Tag
- The coded messages can be solved using the same method used for the safety protocols message from Episode 3.
- The two different handwritings used for the coded messages are found on other documents and items in this episode and past episodes.
Trap Sensor Log
- This document, combined with other information from this episode and previous episodes, will help eliminate a suspect.
- Take note of the locations of the traps and the date/time the traps were reset.
Wallet
- There is something hidden inside the wallet.
DeviantTracker Samples
- The unknown DNA sample matches the Canada lynx DNA sample. Both human male DNA and Canada lynx DNA are present on the bloody gauze.
Luggage Tag
- The message says: "TAKE TOBY ON HIKE. I NEED A BREAK" / "FINE YOU OWE ME".
- The first rabbit track handwriting is found on the field journal page. The second handwriting is found on the hiking medallion and the safety protocols.
Wallet
- There is a note hidden behind Toby's university ID inside the wallet.
Solution
- Rusty Tudlik can be eliminated from the suspect list.
- Previously, it was established that Toby had to have been killed sometime between 9:00 PM and 10:15 PM. Based on the trail cam photos, the killer was using Tall Pines Trail as a route back to camp from Echo Cavern, and they were on this route from at least 10:15 to 10:45 PM. According to the field interviews, everyone was in camp at 11 PM.
- The trap sensor log provides a record of when traps in the region were triggered and reset. If a trap was triggered, that means an animal became trapped or it was set off in some way. If manually reset, that means that someone would have had to go to the trap location and manually reset it. The trap located in L33 was triggered and reset on the night of the murder. It was triggered at 20:33 (8:33 PM) and reset at 22:11 (10:11 PM).
- The topographical map provides the locations of all five traps in the region. L33 is located in the eastern part of the region, adjacent to camp and beside Knotwood River. Echo Cavern, where Toby was killed, is in the western part of the region. Additionally, on the trail cam photos, the killer was captured in F15 at 10:15 PM. The person resetting the trap at L33 at 10:11 PM could not have made it to F15 in four minutes.
- In Rusty's field interview, he says that he went to reset the trap located to the east of camp after dinner - this would be the trap at L33. He remarks on finding a "loup-cervier" (Canada lynx) in the trap and it injured his arm. When he got back to camp, he wrapped it up. This would account for the bloody gauze found at camp, which can be seen in the photo uploaded to DeviantTracker.
- The DeviantTracker Samples tab provides two different sets of DNA found on the gauze: a human male and unknown. If a Canada lynx scratched or bit Rusty, its DNA would be found on the wound, and subsequently the gauze. The unknown DNA sample matches up with the Canada lynx DNA sample, proving that Rusty's alibi is solid.
- It's important to note: Rusty appears to be communicating secretly with one of the expedition team members. The luggage tag features the same handwriting found on the safety protocols from Episode 3 and the hiking medallion from Episode 2. The medallion has the initial "R" etched in code, and the safety protocols appear to have been written and distributed by Rusty. Therefore, one of the handwritings on the luggage tag must belong to Rusty. However, his strong alibi and lack of apparent motive can safely rule him out.
- With this information, Rusty Tudlik can be eliminated as a suspect.
