Episode 5

Currently on Renfaire Regicide...

When you solved the mystery of what the other volunteers have been planning, Art discovered an even greater threat to the faire: some of the volunteers are planning to leave and start their own faire in competition. Such a move would destroy the White Hilt. During your investigation, you discovered Vivian was leading this movement, and at the time of the murder she was planning it out. With the suspect list growing shorter, there's only one place left where Art has yet to look for clues: the Royal Lounge in the faire, a locked area that the remaining suspects have access to.

Reveals

News Station Offer

  • This is the same encryption used by Chester earlier in the season.
  • The keyword, underlined by Chester earlier in the document, is "regicide". The right arrow indicates a rightward shift.
  • Decoded, the message reads "Take it. Remember, I helped you with your beau."

Royal Lounge Code

  • The first step to revealing the door's code is to solve a book cipher on Cameron's design. To do this, you must use the provided number to find the letter referenced by the code. Referencing each number in the code should give you a complete sentence. The part of the decoded message reads "enter the kingdom" meaning the Royal Lounge. to find the code, you must follow the trail of Sir Erec, described in the story.
  • The relevant locations in Sir Erec's journey in the story are the castle, the woods, the pirate cove, and the cave. These locations also appear on Chester's expanded map, which has an unfolded D10 overlaid atop it. The numbers on the unfolded D10 correspond to each location mentioned in the story (castle = 2, woods = 5, pirate = 9, and cave = 6), making 2596 the answer.
  • To complete the first objective and advance the story, open the messaging client on the desktop and send Art a message with the code "2596". She'll respond with a video that contains your next task for this episode.

Treasure Chest Code

  • Chester's note on his script that reads "Ten sides of fortune foretold and a sword forged of might should grant treasure we behold" points you toward the D10 and the forging plans in order for Art to unlock the treasure chest.
  • Each symbol on Chester's script page gives you a number to start with as you attempt to find the code, as each number is specifically called out in the text as well. The crown is 5-pointed, so that number is 5. There is also one heart and two blades, making their numbers 1 and 2, respectively.
  • Go back to the D10 and start on 5. The forging plans show four arrows under the 5-pointed crown. Starting on 5, follow these arrows on the D10 to land on the answer: 4. Repeat for the 2 swords and 1 heart to get the 3-digit code.
  • To complete the final objective and advance the story, open the messaging client on the desktop and send Art a message with the code "487". She'll respond with a video that concludes this episode.

Cameron's Handwriting

Your Majesty,

I did a couple quick designs of the body-puppet you might like. I knew those metal-as-hell puppets from my Goat Midwinter days would come in handy. I could get this thing working with some help, and some supplies, of course. Let me know when you wanna meet up and we can talk it over.

Royal Lounge Video #1

[Art, holding the camera, stands in front of the door to the Royal Lounge. The camera focuses on the keypad, and Art's hand starts to input the code.]

Art (off-screen, whispering): Two, five, nine, six... Alright! We're in... that's awesome! Oh, there's someone coming, I'm gonna wait for them to go by... before we go inside.

[Art enters and pans around the room with the camera. The room is lit only by the afternoon sun beaming through the windows. Visible are a lounging space with television and a desk.]

Art (off-screen): Okay, we're in. Wow, I haven't been in here since... I didn't know they had a TV in here! Come on! Alright, let's see what we can find.

[Art moves toward the desk and shows a stack of papers and pens haphazardly tossed to the side. Underneath a pile of pens, Chester's script page is visible, recognizable, but not necessarily readable. Art picks up a few of the pages, knocking the pens to the floor. There's nothing underneath.]

Art (off-screen, groaning): Oh, come on.

[Art puts the papers back and leans over to pick up the pens, setting the phone on the table. The sound of Art collecting the pens is cut by her sudden realization.]

Art (off-screen): Oh, oh! Detective!

[Art bumps her head on the table, giving the phone a little shake.]

Art (off-screen, wincing): Ow! Ffff - Ugh, sorry.

[Art snatches the phone off of the table and brings it down to her level. The camera pans to a treasure chest beneath the desk.]

Art (off-screen): Hey, look at that. There's got to be something in there, right?

[The combination lock on the front is clearly visible. She reaches for the lock and rattles it. No good.]

Art (off-screen): Come on! Huh.

[Art turns the camera to face her. She looks nervous and excited.]

Art (resolute, full volume): Okay, well, there's got to be something inside that chest. I don't know if anyone is on their way back here, so let's hurry. I'm going to send you anything I find around here that I think might help us get in. And you... try looking through all your evidence and see if you can find us a way to get inside the chest. Send me the code as soon as you can, okay? Talk to you soon!

[Art stops the video and the clip ends.]

Royal Lounge Video #2

[Art holds her phone camera pointed at the unlocked treasure chest. Inside, there's a stack of papers.]

Art (off-camera): What do we have in here?

[Art picks up a small figurine.]

Art (off-screen): Hey, little guy.

[She sets the figurine aside. Various papers are shown scattered inside the chest.]

Art (off-screen): Okay... Hm...

[Art rummages through the various things, briefly showing some of them to the camera as she takes them out of the chest. She pauses as the Green Knight seals are revealed and she processes what she's seeing.]

Art (off-screen): The Green Knight...

[Art takes a beat to finish processing and then flips the camera to face herself. Her expression is clearly strained as she confronts the reality of the murderer having been in this exact same spot.]

Art: (sighs) Well, now we know for sure. The murderer has access to this room, and to this chest. I've got to get all this over to you. I'm going to send you all of the clues that we found in this chest. You've got another package coming from me, okay? I'll talk to you soon.

[Art nods resolute and stops recording. The video ends.]

Vivian's Statement Video

[Art holds her phone to record Vivian leaning against the wall of her shop in full costume. Vivian is clearly annoyed or at least tired as she tries to entertain Art's questions.]

Vivian (reticent): Were you like this in high school? I always thought you were the quiet girl.

Art (off-screen): I was. Things are different now. Tell me what happened.

Vivian: You know what happened. Or, at least, where I was. There are people who don't like the way White Hilt is going. People who want it to stay the way it was. I agree that it needs to.

Art (off-screen): Why didn't you think I was one of those people?
Vivian: (scoffs) Why would I?

Art (off-screen): Do you think you can now? Trust me, I mean.

[Vivian pauses to think about this.]

Vivian: You're really serious about this? You think someone here did it?

Art (off-screen): Yes.

Vivian: And you're going to figure out who it is?

Art (off-screen): Of course. To free Sam and help get justice for Hank. And I need you to help me.

[Vivian raises her eyebrows.]

Art (off-screen): Hey, listen... I won't tell them what you were doing.

Vivian (determined): You can tell them. I wasn't doing anything illegal, besides it's about time we come right out and talk about how bad the way things are around here.

Art (off-screen): Yeah, so bad that someone killed Hank.

Vivian: Exactly! So, yes, at that time I was working with the other volunteers, trying to come up with a list of demands from Chester and Lynn. I was the one who put the list up. Don't think that you're automatically in with us. There are a lot of things I still need to talk about with the others.

Art (off-screen): I know. And thank you, Vivian. I just need to find whoever killed Hank and set up Sam. Just, please, don't do anything immediately. Let me try to figure this out first.

[The video ends.]

Solution

  • Art asks for your help in order to get into the Royal Lounge of the faire, the only place she hasn't been in order to collect evidence. To find the code for the locked door, you must figure out who is trying to give the code to another person via the evidence in this episode. Cameron's design has a message from Lynn referencing "the tale of the son of Lac". This character's identity is revealed to be Sir Erec, whose tale is told in the cut-out book page. Cross-referencing both documents reveals a book cipher, whose message reads "follow the trail of Sir Erec to enter the kingdom". To uncover the code to the Royal Lounge, you must remember the locations Sir Erec visits on his journey and apply them to Chester's expanded kingdom map. The locations on this map correspond to shapes drawn onto the paper's surface. This is an expanded D10. By figuring out which location corresponds to which side of the die, you will find the password to enter the Royal Lounge, 2596.
  • To complete the first objective and advance the story, open the messaging client on the desktop and send Art a message with the code "2596". She'll respond with a video that contains your next task for this episode.
  • Upon entering the lounge, Art asks for help again, this time to unlock a mysterious chest found under Chester's desk. To do so, you must consult documents related to Chester, namely Chester's script page and the Excalibur forging plans, which contain similar doodles as one another, but on the forging plans, the doodles are upside-down and reversed. To get the password, you must once again reference the D10, rotating it to reveal the correct number. To put these digits in the correct order, you need to find the order the icons appear in Chester's script page. The crown first, then the heart, then the swords, making the passcode 4-8-7.
  • To complete the final objective and advance the story, open the messaging client on the desktop and send Art a message with the code "487". She'll respond with the conclusion for this episode where she promises to send another package with new evidence. Until then, Detective!
