Episode 3

Currently on Renfaire Regicide...

After you proved Morgan wasn't Hank's killer, Art asked you to investigate a new mystery: the fact that the murder didn't actually take place at the forge. She investigated the true crime scene, Hank's favorite bar, and found a bloody piece of costume. Since then, Morgan helped Art gather more evidence, and she tells you that Morgan's help with the investigation has been invaluable.

Hints

Internal Tournament Pitch Code

  • The code used on this document has been used in a previous episode.
  • Are there any keys given on this document that could help decode the message at the bottom?
  • Remember to look one step after the key to find what you are looking for.

Jester Jokes Code

  • You might need to use more than one document to solve this code.
  • Do any other documents have circles on them?
  • The positioning of the notches is critical to decode the message.

Logging On

  • Check Art's letter for the specific task she assigns you: clear someone from the suspect pool using the new information she sent you. Go to michellegrayinvestigations.com and enter the password PORTER. Then, click on the RENFAIRE folder and enter the password QUEEN to access this episode's digital evidence and communicate with Art.

Song Lyrics Code

  • Reading sheet music might help with this code, but everything needed to solve this code is on the bottom of the last page.
  • How many numbers are on the sheet music on the bottom of the last page? How many letters are in the alphabet?
  • Words are separated by vertical lines on the sheet music. So a section of four notes encodes a four-letter word.
  • The first letter of the first encoded phrase is "G".

Suspect Elimination

  • Is there any text in this episode that seems like it could be an obvious code?
  • Is there any indication as to who these codes could belong to, or who each message could be meant for?
  • Are there any timestamps in this episode that could prove a suspect was away from the scene of the murder?

Reveals

Internal Tournament Pitch Code

  • The code used on this document is the same as the code from Episode 1's annotated outline that used the lion ring. The keyword used for this instance of the code has been changed.
  • The keyword is given in the title of the internal tournament pitch "The Knight is the Key". The keyword is "Knight".
  • Going through the encoded text at the bottom and picking the letters that come after "K-N-I-G-H-T" in order gives the following message: "Kept your secret with Cam."

Jester Jokes Code

  • The jester jokes contain a series of symbols that are an encoded message. The key to solving this code is on a different document.
  • The key needed to solve this code is on the urgent care receipt.
  • To solve the encoded message on the jester jokes, you must look at the position of the notches on each of the circles and match them to the position of the letters in the key. Each circle is a single word in a phrase.
  • Critical reading of the jester jokes and urgent care receipt reveals both documents belong to Danny.
  • Decoded, the message on the jester jokes document reads "I stole the helm. Cover for me, Cam, and I'll cover for you."

Song Lyrics Code

  • The musical scale on the bottom of the last page is the key to this puzzle. Notice there are 26 numbers on the scale, and there are 26 letters in the alphabet.
  • The pattern at the bottom of the key (eighth note = 1, quarter note = 2, half note = 3) repeats for each position up the scale. Continuing this pattern means the next spot up with 456 would translate to eighth note = 4, quarter note = 5, half note = 6. The next spot up with 789 would translate to eighth note = 7, quarter note = 8, half note = 9, etc.
  • Matching the numbers from the key with the letters of the alphabet is how the message is decoded. For example, in the first piece of sheet music there is an eighth note on the second line. Looking at the key, this corresponds to the number 7. The seventh letter of the alphabet is "G", so the first letter of the first message is "G".
  • The first encoded message is "Guinevere your knight is here waiting".
  • The second encoded message is "I love you I love you I love you".

Suspect Elimination

  • The stolen item Danny is referring to in the jester jokes code is the helmet from the Lancelot costume, mentioned in the inventory log.
  • By looking at the urgent care receipt and the inventory log, it's clear Danny suffered a latex allergy by touching the helmet.
  • The timestamp on the urgent care receipt proves Danny was nowhere near the faire at the time of the murder.
  • To complete this episode's objective and advance the story, open the messaging client on the desktop and send Art a message with the name "Danny". She'll respond with the conclusion for this episode.

Jester Jokes

Page 1 → Danny's Handwriting

  • Cam, can you help me with some of these jokes?
  • What did Gawain order for lunch?
  • The same thing Galahad.
  • So, I'm a jester. You can tell because (gesture at costume) I'm the one telling jokes. Gesture/jester? Something there?
  • Names have changed a lot over the years. You know. Lance isn't a common name these days, but in medieval times, people were named Lance a lot.
  • Have any of you heard of that new play, the one about sheep politics?
  • Much Ado About Mutton
  • I heard it's (sheep noise) baaaaad. So bad, in fact, that the playwright barely escaped the audience. He's currently on the lamb.
  • Would you believe I used to be a knight? Yeah, I'm sure it was obvious. I mean, what other jester do you know with this much swagger?
  • So I bet you're wondering what happened. Well, I told the king I once killed a dragon with one arm and leg tied behind my back just like this (off balance on purpose). I was in the middle of showing him my amazing form here when he suddenly burst into laughter just like you're doing and before I knew it I was here.

  • Better not to plan for laughs.

Page 1 → Danny's Handwriting

  • Templars all know the best place to hire a ride through the desert. It's the Camelot.
  • A peasant stole the king's scepter, so the king took a carriage to the beach. He didn't find the thief and so the queen asked him, "Why did we come all this way to the ocean?" To which the king replied, "Well, dear, I heard this is where I could catch some serf."

Page 1 → Cameron's Handwriting

  • These are all good, gotta get that PG family-centric humor. Also give jester's privilege a try. You can roast anyone and get away with it under the veil of comedy.

Page 2 → Danny's Handwriting

  • I heard Merlin learned how to turn himself into a dog recently
  • Which is perfect because he spends so much time lapping behind the lady of the lake, you'd hardly know he's a man in the first place (is this too much?)
  • Did you know the king and queen sleep in separate beds now?
  • One is in the castle, the other's at the inn.
  • It's ironic the king favors Mordred the Usurper so much. But then again, this Mordred couldn't usurp a child's choir, let alone the throne.
  • - No toilet humor -
  • No one likes being near the king. The king's a scary guy. Not as scary as Mordred though, it's even in the name: more-dread.
  • Lancelot's got the wrong name. Have you seen him joust? More like Lance-a-little.
  • You know why it's a round table, right? It's the same reason you give children safety scissors. If it's round, they're less likely to hurt themselves. Everyone thinks the king's looking at maps but they're really coloring books.
  • [13 cipher symbols]

Song Lyrics and Set List

Page 1 → Cameron's Handwriting

  • Set List for tournament day
  • 2 performances - according to Chester, times still up in the air
  • Obligatory Lancelot song - ego-friendly
  • "̵O̵h̵ ̵h̵a̵i̵l̵ ̵t̵h̵e̵r̵e̵ ̵g̵o̵e̵s̵ ̵S̵i̵r̵ ̵L̵a̵n̵c̵e̵l̵o̵t̵.̵ ̵B̵o̵y̵ ̵i̵s̵ ̵h̵e̵ ̵s̵o̵ ̵s̵t̵r̵o̵n̵g̵ ̵a̵n̵d̵ ̵h̵o̵t̵!̵"̵
  • Chester can write that
  • Allow me to sing you a song I know well
  • Of Lancelot and his queen
  • Though I'm but a bard discarded
by his treacherous troupe in the snow
    with naught but a goat
and a hole in my coat * [arrow pointing to asterisk] pause for audience reaction
of Love I am joyful to sing!
Twas once a truly gorgeous queen
Whose stare could make a dragon scream
S̵i̵r̵ ̵L̵a̵n̵c̵e̵l̵o̵t̵ Tho all the men would cast their shot
    Her heart belonged to Lancelot

    Trotting home from his success
He sings of love, a heart possessed:
    O! Lady, heav'n sent,
Know our love I shan't repent
    Seraphim alight sign on
    Glory, light, and love anon
And with your heart you honor me
A knight a̵m̵ ̵I̵ who wishes only of thee
your love. Your love, and I will be happy.

A blissful night with her, where we
    Sacrifice nobility
Say goodbye to tears and flee

    Welcome in divinity
    Y̵o̵u̵ ̵a̵n̵d̵ ̵I̵ ̵a̵r̵e̵ ̵o̵n̵e̵,̵

Solution

  • Artemis says it was helpful to have Morgan help her gather all this new information related to the murder, but also a new and a little frightening; Art's never been in a position of leadership or given out orders before. Nevertheless, she needs help clearing another suspect, so hopefully, she can sway them to her side. To find out who she can eliminate from the suspect pool, you must start with the encoded message written on the jester jokes. Critical reading will tell you the document itself was written by Danny, but in order to figure out what the encoded text means, you must consult the urgent care receipt. That document provides the key to solving the cipher. It involves cross-referencing the circle images with the skull; each notch inside the circle correlates to a single letter, and each circle a word. It reveals the message "I stole the helm. cover for me, Cam, and I'll cover for you." By solving Chester's heraldry cipher and Cameron's song lyrics cipher, it can be deduced that Chester is aware that Lynn and Cameron are having an affair. Based off of this information, Danny covering for Cameron, means Danny was helping Cameron keep his affair with Lynn a secret in return for Cameron keeping Danny's theft a secret.
  • By cross-referencing the urgent care receipt with the inventory log, you can find out that this helm Danny stole was one for Chester's costume. However, it contained latex, which sent him to urgent care due to an allergy. The timestamp on the receipt clears Danny of Hank's murder, since he was across town at the time.
  • To complete the objective for this episode and advance the story, open the messaging client on the desktop and send Art a message with the name "Danny". She'll respond with the conclusion of this episode where she promises to send another package with new evidence. Until then, Detective!
