Solution
- Toby Mendia did not die from a bear attack - he was murdered. The murder weapon was a tactical knife with a 5-inch blade.
- The body was found outside Echo Cavern, which is a known bear habitat according to the Moon Summit National Park website. The incident report and incident area sketch include several details which would indicate the presence of a bear: bear tracks and bear scat in the immediate area; marks that reveal the body was dragged toward the cave entrance, which according to the wildlife guide, is something grizzly bears do with their pray; a shredded granola wrapper near the body, which might indicate the bear was lured by the scent of food.
- In the autopsy, there are two categories of wounds on the body: attack wounds and scavenging wounds. Both wounds were presumably inflicted by a bear, but there are key differences in the types of wounds. The scavenging wounds were nonfatal and no deeper than 4 inches. The attack wounds were all fatal and 5 inches deep. Therefore, it is the 5-inch wounds that killed Toby.
- The wildlife guide informs that black bear claws range from 1-2 inches and grizzly bear claws range from 2-4 inches. The provided bear claw can be measured with the multitool to help support these facts. Based on this information, a bear claw may have caused the nonfatal wounds, but not the fatal 5-inch wounds. Additionally, there were no indications of bite marks on the body, which would create a noticeable pattern on the skin. There were also no wounds that indicated a struggle, which would likely be present if he was killed by a bear or any other kind of animal. The autopsy notes that Toby lying on his stomach when he died, based on the livor mortis pattern. The lack of frontal impact indicates that he did not fall forward.
- The fatal wounds were inflicted before death (antemortem), but the nonfatal wounds were inflicted after death (postmortem). Therefore, it is safe to say that a bear inflicted the nonfatal wounds while scavenging the body some time after Toby died, which helped disguise the previously-inflicted fatal wounds.
- So, where did the 5-inch wounds come from, if they were not caused by a bear? The supply list has a variety of items listed, including several potential murder weapons. However, there is only one item that could inflict a stab wound 5 inches deep: the tactical knife.
