The Mine

Episode 2

Bracelet

The stone token is magnetically attracted to this bracelet.

There are 2 charms on this bracelet, a lantern and a bird in a cage.

  • Canaries in cages were often used by miners to warn of toxic gas leaks. As long as the bird was awake and alive, the miners were safe. If it passed out or died, they had better high-tail it out of there.

Exhibit Research

On the petition, David Griffith's entry stands out bold and strong among the others.

Journal Entries

Starting with the entry of 3, August 1873 on page 12, we get coded messages.

👀 This is a simple substitution cipher. Replace the alphabet with a backward alphabet. I.e., A becomes Z, B becomes Y, etc.

3 August 1873

  • "AND A STRANGE LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS, TOO"

1 September 1873

  • "GLOWING VEIN"
  • "LUSTER"
  • "I CAN HEAR IT VIBRATING IN THE NIGHT, EVEN THROUGH MY DREAMS, THE SOUND LIKE THE LAST FAINT RESONANCES OF A DISTANT BELL."

👀 There is a typo in the third message. It should actually read: R xzm svzi rg eryizgrmt rm gsv mrtsg, vevm gsilfts nb wivznh, gsv hlfmw orpv gsv ozhg uzrmg ivhlmzmxvh lu z wrhgzmg yvoo.

10 October 1873

  • "FOR IF HE HAD SEEN THE SHADOWS THAT MOVED IN THAT SUBTLE GLOW, HE MIGHT NOT BE SO COMPLACENT"

24 May 1875

  • "I LONG TO RETURN TO THE CAVES. I HEAR THEM IN MY DREAMS, CALLING TO ME."

1 June 1875

  • "MOUTH OF THE CAVE AT TWILIGHT"
  • "FAINTLY LUMINESCENT IN MOONLIGHT"

18 October 1875

  • "FOXFIRE"
  • "A PASSAGE I HAD NOT PREVIOUSLY MAPPED"
  • "MY CAIRN STOOD BEFORE A SOLID WALL"

29 October 1875

  • "THE SHADOWS AT THE EDGES OF MY VISION"
  • "THE BONES OF A CHILD"
  • "PASSING ALONGSIDE ME IN THE DARKNESS OF THE TUNNELS"

👀 Starting with the 5 January 1876 entry, we will also have to read each word backward after the initial shift.

5 January 1876

  • "THE IMAGE OF BONES ON THE CAVE'S FLOOR HAS NOT LEFT MY DREAMS FOR SEVERAL NIGHTS NOW. I SEE THEIR OUTLINES EVEN IN MY WAKING HOURS, IN THE CURLING FOG."

28 March 1876

  • "THE POTENTIAL PROFIT TO BE HAD FROM THOSE LUSTROUS STONES"

5 April 1876

  • "IT STILL STANDS AGAINST SOLID WALL, BUT APPEARS TO BE MUCH TALLER NOW."

April 1876 (2)

  • "JAGGED SEAM OF LUSTROUS STONE"
  • "IT WAS NOWHERE TO BE SEEN"

April 1876 (3)

  • "I OBSERVED A GLOWING BLUE FIGURE STRAIGHT DOWN THE TUNNEL, ALMOST HUMANOID IN SHAPE. I FELT COMPELLED TO FOLLOW IT."
  • "THE FIGURE HAD VANISHED."
  • "SEAMS OF LUSTROUS ROCK SHOT UP AND ACROSS THE VAST ROOF LIKE THE VAULTING OF A CATHEDRAL CEILING. THEIR GLOW REFLECTED OFF THE POOL'S SURFACE AND THE SILENT HUM OF THEIR POWER FILLED THE AIR."

April 1876 (5)

  • "I LOOKED DOWN TO SEE A SKULL GRINNING BACK UP AT ME. SURROUNDING IT AS FAR AS THE EYE COULD SEE WERE THE SKELETONS OF ALL VARIETY OF SPECIES. SUFFERING ALL MANNER OF MUTILATIONS. THE POOL'S FLOOR IS AN EXPANSIVE MOSAIC OF BONE."

April 1876 (6)

  • "IT HITS THE LEFT SIDE OF MY FACE, THE SIDE FACING THE TUNNELS. IT IS RHYTHMIC, LIKE BREATH."

6 June 1876

  • "LUSTER"

8 June 1876

  • "HE WAS SWALLOWING THE RODENT, HIS JAW UNHINGED LIKE THAT OF A SNAKE."

27 September 1879

  • "WILL KEEP HIS BONES SO THAT I MIGHT ADD THEM TO THE PILE IN HIS HOMELAND ON MY NEXT EXPEDITION."

👀 Starting with the 9 July 1885 entry, we will need to unscramble the letters of the words after we use the other two decoding methods.

9 July 1885

  • "IF I LOOK CLOSELY INTO MY MIRRORED EYES, THE LIGHT BEGINS TO PLAY TRICKS ON ME, REFRACTING ALL MANNER OF COLOR. I CAN LOOK AT THOSE COLORS FOR HOURS AT A TIME."

15 February 1887

  • "FRENCH DISEASE"
  • "MOVING ON TO MORE PERSONAL AREAS"
  • "MERCURY PILLS"

16 December 1890

  • "IN PLACE OF BLOOD, DARK MUD HAS BEEN SEEPING FROM THE WOUND ALL DAY."

21 January 1891

  • "JUDGING BY THE SCORING ON THE CREATURE'S CARCASS, I SPENT SOME TIME GNAWING AT ITS BONES. THE BITTERSWEET TASTE OF ITS FLESH STILL LINGERS ON MY TONGUE."

19 March 1899

  • "I DO NOT KNOW PRECISELY WHAT HAD OVERTAKEN ME. BUT EVEN NOW I FEEL THE KEEN THRUM OF ITS POWER UNDERNEATH MY SKIN, A SECOND HEARTBEAT."

6 June 1906

  • "THE ONLY WAY OUT IS DOWN."

Letter from Museum Curator

In this letter, the curator speaks of an apparition in her museum apparently trying to steal an item. She took a photo of him, which she included in our package. She has also included the item.

She believes the ghost to be that of David Griffith.

  • She says an older version. But his body was never found, and he was only presumed dead. There is no proof he died and wouldn't have aged to look like he does in the photo.

Letter from Museum Director

This letter introduces the included journal.

  • We are directed on how to access our next assignment on the Cooper Heritage Center website.

Miner's Postcard

This was the only item left on the curator's desk after "something" swept everything else to the floor.

There is a coded message underlying in this postcard.

  • One must shine the black light from Episode 1 on the symbols in order to see them better.

Seeing as we have not cracked the secret alphabet yet, we must add this to our list of things to follow up on later in the season.

Mining Company Memo

There is a cipher at the top of the first page and the bottom of the last page.

Seeing as we are dealing with letters, and we had to use a typewriter model in Episode 1, we will be doing the same in this episode.

  • Googling 1959 Galaxie typewriter produces the model Smith Corona Galaxie.

To decode the messages, pay particular attention to the punctuation preceding the phrases.

  • Looking at the typewriter keyboard, note that " = 2, ' = 8, and - = 6.
  • These are the number of shifts for the letters following those symbols.
  • You will shift backward in the alphabet.

Once decoded, the messages read:

  • "DO NOT DISTRIBUTE BEYOND THIS OFFICE"
  • "NO STOPPAGE. LVL NEGOTIATIONS WILL CONTINUE."

Newspaper Clipping

Are the authors of the articles related?

  • Both have the surname Sutherland.

Is Pennywise haunting this town? lol

  • A man states he saw something that could not be. His neighbor did not see the monster, only Fuller.
  • Is the evil taking on the form of people's fears?
  • Could the evil have made the curator's neighbor see something that wasn't there, making him walk out in front of her car?

"A slow, dark flood pools at our waist."

  • The evil has come and is growing. This town is fucked.

Stone Token

The curator sent this to us for safekeeping. The apparition she had been seeing inside her museum has been attempting to steal it.

It is magnetically attracted to the accompanying bracelet.
