Episode 3

Coded Letter

This appears to be a backward (meaning read from right to left) coded cipher.

This letter is written by Viola using an atbash cipher.

Once decoded, the words read:

  • HECTOR
  • WE CAN'T GET MARRIED, HECTOR. I'M CALLING OFF THE ENGAGEMENT.
  • MARRY YOU
  • IN LOVE
  • FALLING IN LOVE
  • LOVE
  • MARRYING
  • INVESTED IN ME
  • MOVING ON TO A GIRL HE CAN ACTUALLY SPEND HIS LIFE WITH
  • FIND LOVE
  • HECTOR
  • ARM IN ARM WITH OUR RESPECTIVE LOVERS
  • HECTOR
  • FALSE ROMANCE
  • YOUR OCCASIONAL SCENE PARTNER AND ETERNAL FRIEND
  • VIOLA
  • MOTHER
  • KEEPING HER TEMPER IN CHECK

Coin Purse

There are 2 documents hidden within the coin purse.

Julia Letter

Julia gives us the new password to her folder on the virtual desktop.

  • ARROW

As well as the subject line for when we eliminate another suspect:

  • ASSASSINS

Poster Proof

On the backside is yet another stage position cipher.

Once decoded, the message reads:

  • "YOU CHECK ON VI? SHE ALL RIGHT?"

Script Notes

Since the "Assistant" lines are highlighted, it is safe to assume these notes belonged to Evelyn.

She and Viola seem to be having an ongoing conversation on these sheets of paper.

  • What is the significance of the "x'd" out letters...?

If Evelyn and Ira were married, why all the secrecy?

  • This must have been before they got married...

Telegram

This is a telegram from Ruth to her husband George.

  • It is dated November 6, 1934, at 9:51 PM.

Theater Keychain

This is a gift from Julia.

Wow, only 55 cents to see a live show.

  • Wow, only 55 cents to see a live show.

Train Ticket

This is hidden in the coin purse.

It is a frequent punch card for train rides between New York and Syracuse belonging to Ruth.

It shows which days she used it.

  • November 6
  • November 15
  • November 25
  • November 28

Ruth wrote some "errands" on the backside, as well as a coded message.

Ruth's note is dated the 6th.

  • Shift each letter in the coded message by 6.

Once decoded, the message reads:

  • "CALL LAWRENCE?"

Train Timetable

This is hidden in the coin purse.

This gives us an idea of which train Ruth took to get to Pennsylvania.

There is only one train to Tannersville.

In order to get to Tannersville by 9:51 (when the telegram was sent), she would have needed to leave Penn Station by 6:20 PM.

  • She was seen at the Cadence theater around 5:00 PM that day, so she had to have taken either the 5:20 PM or 6:20 PM train.

She could not have been at the theater, killing Viola, and then been on time for her train.

  • Ruth can be eliminated as a suspect.
